Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has urged African nations to focus on tackling hunger and improving basic living standards before joining the global race for scientific milestones like space exploration.
Speaking at the launch of the Africa Academy of Sciences in Accra, Mr Obasanjo cautioned against what he called a misplaced rush toward high-tech ambitions while many Africans continue to struggle with food insecurity, inadequate healthcare, and limited access to education.
“We are not ready to go to the moon,” he said pointedly. “But if you cannot go to the moon yet, let us touch our stomach, and then later on, those who are on the moon, we will catch up with them.”

His remarks drew warm applause from a diverse audience of scientists, policymakers, and development experts gathered to discuss the continent’s scientific future.
Obasanjo, a long-time proponent of pan-African progress and self-reliance, stressed that while science, technology, and innovation are essential tools for Africa’s growth, they must be rooted in the urgent and lived realities of the people.
“I believe that our knowledge, our science, our technology, our innovation should start with our stomach, food,” he said. “If we can conquer our stomach and fill it with what we produce, what we manufacture, what we process, we will be solving one important problem.”
He emphasised that food self-sufficiency must become the cornerstone of any development strategy on the continent, suggesting that scientific excellence should not come at the cost of social and economic fundamentals.
The event was also attended by Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, who echoed similar sentiments about the need for Africa’s development agenda to be people-centred.
The Africa Academy of Sciences launch represents a renewed effort to position science at the heart of the continent’s development journey, but Obasanjo’s message was a timely reminder: bold innovation must walk hand in hand with basic human needs.
