Abdul Mumin joins Girona on free transfer after being impressed by club’s footballing vision

Ghana international defender Abdul Mumin says Girona’s attractive style of play and ambitious long-term plans persuaded him to join the Spanish club ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The 28-year-old centre-back has moved to Girona on a free transfer after leaving fellow LaLiga side Rayo Vallecano. He has agreed a three-season contract with the Catalan club, where he is expected to provide defensive depth, physical strength and valuable experience.

Mumin said Girona’s footballing identity, together with the progress made by the club in recent years, played a central role in his decision.

“The main thing that attracted me to Girona, I think, is the club itself. Girona, I think, is a club with a lot of history and over the past years, the type of football they play has been very attractive,” Mumin said.

He also believes the club’s wider project will appeal to players who want to improve and progress in their careers.

“I believe that for all footballers that want to improve in their professional career, it’s a project that they will look up to,” he explained.

Mumin brings four years of experience in Spanish football to Girona. He spent the past four seasons with Rayo Vallecano, making more than 60 official appearances while competing at the highest level in Spain.

The defender began his European career with Danish club FC Nordsjælland before moving to Portuguese side Vitoria Guimaraes. His time in LaLiga has since given him extensive knowledge of Spanish football and the demands of top-flight competition.

At 1.88 metres, Mumin offers a significant physical presence in central defence. His move to Girona also follows an important period on the international stage with Ghana.

He made his senior debut for the Black Stars in June 2024 and was included in Ghana’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. That experience has added to his developing international profile and further strengthened the qualities he can bring to his new club.

Girona will hope Mumin’s defensive ability and understanding of LaLiga can help improve competition and stability at the back as they prepare for the new campaign. His arrival gives the squad another experienced option in central defence while also adding a player familiar with the pace and tactical demands of Spanish football.

For Mumin, the transfer represents the next stage of his career after four seasons with Rayo Vallecano. He now has the opportunity to continue his development within a club whose modern approach, attractive football and ambitions align closely with his own aims.

The Ghana defender’s three-year agreement means Girona have secured his services without a transfer fee, while Mumin will look to establish himself as an important part of the team during the 2026/27 season.
