Talensi District Chief Executive John Millim Nabwomya has urged young people in the district to take personal responsibility for hygiene and help keep their communities clean.
He made the appeal during this month’s National Sanitation Day exercise in Tongo, where residents cleared waste from several parts of the township, including the market and lorry park.
The Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, joined the Talensi District Assembly for the exercise, accompanied by staff from the Upper East Regional Coordinating Council.
Participants carried out extensive work, including desilting gutters, cutting weeds and disposing of rubbish. Members of the security services also took part, alongside large numbers of students from Bolgatanga Senior High School.
Mr Atanga welcomed the strong turnout, but reminded residents that maintaining clean surroundings was both a civic duty and an expression of patriotism.
He said the government would continue to provide logistics and support for water and sanitation in the district.
The clean-up was also held simultaneously in Pwalugu, Datuko and Nungu, all within the Talensi District, as part of efforts to create a disease-free society.
