The Inspector-General of Police has deployed homicide investigators, crime scene experts and intelligence officers to Tamale after the bodies of three children were found in the boot of a vehicle at Koblimahagu Zoo.
The Northern Regional Police Command said it had begun investigating the deaths of Dauda Abdul Aziz, aged three, Saani Alsharaf, aged five, and Dauda Fadilan, aged seven.
According to a statement signed by Northern Regional Police Commander DCOP Wisdom Lavoe, police received a report on 5 October 2026 that the children had left home for Islamic classes at about 8am on Sunday, 4 October 2026.
They were reported not to have returned, prompting community members to search for them. Their bodies were found at about 5am on Monday, 5 October, inside the boot of a black Hyundai Tucson with registration number AS 1770-14.
Police officers went to the location after receiving the report and found the vehicle stuck in mud on a road leading to the area.
A preliminary inspection found that the driver’s door and the rear passenger door behind the driver’s seat were open. The remaining doors, including the boot, were locked.
The police statement said initial inquiries indicated that the vehicle belonged to a personnel of the Ghana Immigration Service. The owner told investigators that the vehicle had been trapped in the mud for the previous five days.
The vehicle owner has been arrested and is being taken to Accra to assist with the investigation.
The special team sent by the Inspector-General of Police will support the Northern Regional Police Command as it works to establish the circumstances surrounding the children’s deaths.
Police have secured the Hyundai Tucson and will subject it to further forensic examination.
The Command said all necessary investigative steps were being taken and assured the public that efforts were under way to determine exactly what led to the deaths of the three children.
