Sunyani Municipal Hospital call for infrastructure expansion

The Medical Superintendent of Sunyani Municipal Hospital, Dr. Michael Arthur has emphasized the need for immediate infrastructure expansion to enhance the facility’s capacity to provide quality healthcare services.

Dr. Arthur, the hospital that will celebrate 100 years in 2027, faces infrastructure deficit, particularly in the emergency ward, severely hampers its ability to deliver optimal care.

The Medical Superintendent made the request in an interview journalist during the MCE’s unannounced visit to Sunyani municipal hospital on Tuesday, where he engaged with staff and patients to gain first-hand insight into the challenges faced by the facility and identify areas for improvement.

Dr. Micheal Arthur told Kaakyire Kwasi Afari of Sunyani-based Ark fm that Given the hospital’s high patient load, with an average of 100 patients daily, Dr. Arthur stressed that expansion is crucial.

He noted that while the existing hospital block is still in use and can not be demolished outright, he advocated for constructing a new block before demolishing the old one to ensure uninterrupted services.

According to him, land is available for the expansion project, which would enable the hospital to be upgraded to a modern facility.
Dr. Arthur also pointed out pressing issues, such as roof leakages during rainfall, and urged the assembly to address these challenges in the meantime while planning for the larger expansion project.

Beyond the infrastructure concerns, the Medical Superintendent, Dr. Michael Arthur highlighted further essential medical equipment, including mattresses, anesthesia machines, and monitors, which remain scarce.

Additionally, Dr. Arthur called on the assembly to take action against unauthorized kiosks and containers encroaching on the hospital’s surroundings.

He noted that these structures not only compromise the aesthetic appeal of the facility but also obstruct visibility, posing potential security risks.
