The University of Ghana branch of the University Teachers’ Association of Ghana (UTAG-UG) says its members will withdraw teaching and related services from Monday, 19 October 2026, unless the government pays the 2026 Book and Research Allowance by Friday, 16 October.
The warning was contained in a notice of intention to embark on industrial action dated 9 October 2026 and sent to the Executive Secretary of the National Labour Commission.
UTAG-UG said it remained dissatisfied with what it described as the government’s continued delay in paying the allowance, which supports lecturers’ academic and research activities.
The association said the delay breached a 2020 Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signed between UTAG and the government. Under that agreement, the Book and Research Allowance is expected to be paid by the end of August each year.
“Given the current circumstances, if by Friday 16th October 2026 these monies are not paid, members of UTAG-UG will withdraw all teaching and related services beginning Monday 19th of October 2026,” the notice said.
The letter was signed by the branch president, Dr Jerry Joe Harrison, and its secretary, Godfred Bright Hagan.
Copies of the notice were sent to the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, the ministers responsible for Employment and Labour Relations, Finance, and Education, the Director of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, and the national president of UTAG.
The proposed action follows earlier warnings from the University of Ghana branch about delays in paying the allowance.
If implemented, the withdrawal of services could affect teaching and other related academic activities at the University of Ghana.
