Two people have died after a galamsey pit collapsed at Sefwi Datano in the Bodi District of Ghana’s Western North Region.
The victims have been identified as Kwaku Charles and Nana Dibi, both believed to have been in their early thirties. A third person who was reportedly working with them at the time remains unaccounted for.
The men were said to have been mining for gold at a site where they regularly worked when the pit gave way, trapping them underground. Residents and other rescuers quickly gathered at the scene to try to locate and recover those trapped.

An excavator was brought in to support the rescue operation. However, the machine reportedly severed the head of one of the victims before the bodies were eventually brought out.
Joseph Debrah, the Unit Committee Member for Datano, told 3news that he received a distress call reporting that two people had been trapped inside a galamsey pit.
He said he alerted community leaders, who mobilised some of the youth to assist with the rescue. Police officers from Bodi were also informed and joined the operation to recover the bodies.
The bodies were later taken to the mortuary at Juaboso Government Hospital for preservation and further investigation.
The incident has left the Sefwi Datano community mourning, while efforts continue to determine the whereabouts of the third person believed to have been at the mining site when the collapse occurred.
