Ntikuma Project opens first ICT lab at Akim Asafo Presbyterian Basic School

The Ntikuma Project (TNP) has handed over 14 all-in-one desktop computers and a printer to Akim Asafo Presbyterian Basic School, completing its first digital education deployment.

The Ghanaian non-profit formally presented the equipment on 7 October at the school in the Abuakwa South Municipality. The handover also marked the opening of the school’s first functioning ICT laboratory.

A further six computers are expected to be delivered before the end of 2026. TNP has also pledged an ASANKA Device for the school, which will support teaching and learning for three years.

The portable offline learning hub provides curriculum-aligned lessons, videos and assessments to pupils and teachers through its own local Wi-Fi network. It does not require an internet connection.

Before the project, ICT practical lessons were taught on a whiteboard or using a single laptop belonging to the ICT teacher. With classes averaging 40 pupils, the school had no projector, printer or computer owned by the institution.

The new facility is intended to allow pupils to practise digital skills themselves rather than only watch demonstrations.

The equipment has been donated unconditionally and is now owned outright by the school. Each computer operates on Windows 11 with LibreOffice and an offline learning library, allowing the lab to function without internet access.

Every item was checked against its serial number and tested before the handover. The equipment has also been listed in a signed asset register held by the school, TNP and the District Education Directorate.

The handover certificate was signed by TNP and the school’s Headteacher. Representatives of the Akim Asafo Traditional Authority, the Ghana Education Service District Education Office, the Education Unit of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, the Parent-Teacher Association and the teaching staff attended the ceremony.

TNP pre-financed the purchase and handled procurement, customs clearance and installation.

The initiative is the first phase of TNP’s four-stage Technology Enhanced Problem Solvers (TEPS) framework. Its stages are Access & Infrastructure, Skills & Literacy, Practice & Agency, and Technology Enhanced Problem Solvers – young people who use digital tools to address problems in their own communities.

Teachers received orientation before the handover, while TNP will monitor the school’s use of the equipment and learning outcomes against a baseline recorded at deployment.

“My father and grandmother attended Akim Asafo Presbyterian Basic School and growing I remember playing around the school during our family trips here. Working in technology one thing I have seen is that technology has become a very important part of the world. We thought it was important that every child in Ghana has access to technology. This is the reason why we started the Ntikuma project. All great things must start from somewhere and so we chose this school to begin because Asafo is a place I call home,” said Kay Ampofo, Founder and Executive Director of The Ntikuma Project.

Headteacher Mr Twum Ampofo Thomas said the facility would help reduce the technology gap.

“This is a day we have looked forward to because it marks a new chapter in the education of our children. In today’s world, digital skills are no longer a luxury but a necessity. Through this gesture our students will be able to learn, explore and build confidence to use technology. It will help bring them to their competitors solving problems. We are grateful to The Ntikuma project for choosing our school.”
