Ablakwa pledges Ghana government support for 2026 World Assemblies of God Congress

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has pledged the Ghanaian government’s full support for the 10th Triennial Congress of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship, which will be held in Accra from 14th to 16th October 2026.

A delegation from Assemblies of God, Ghana, led by its General Superintendent, Rev. Stephen Wengam, visited Mr Ablakwa at his office in Accra to formally notify the government of the event and request assistance from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Rev. Wengam was accompanied by the General Secretary, Rev. Albert Anane, Rev. Andrews Awintia, who is Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), and other committee members.

The Minister was joined at the meeting by Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs James Gyakye Quayson, Chief Director Ambassador Khadija Iddrisu and other senior officials.

The congress will be the first World Assemblies of God Fellowship Congress to take place in Africa, as well as the first to be hosted in Ghana. Rev. Wengam said the gathering would provide substantial spiritual and economic benefits for the country.

He also highlighted the significance of the event taking place while Ghana’s sitting President is a member of the Church.

Rev. Wengam expressed appreciation to President John Mahama and the Government of Ghana for their important role in preparations for the congress. He also requested support for international delegates who may need help securing visas through Ghana’s embassies abroad.

The delegation told the minister that former President of Malawi H.E. Rev. Dr. Lazarus Chakwera would attend the congress. H.E. Rev. Dr. Chakwera previously served as General Superintendent of Malawi Assemblies of God.

Mr Ablakwa praised the World Assemblies of God Fellowship for selecting Ghana and Africa to host the gathering.

He recognised the contribution of Assemblies of God to worldwide evangelisation and peace, describing it as the largest Protestant denomination in the world.

The Foreign Affairs Minister said the government would provide all necessary assistance to help ensure the congress is successful. He added that H.E. President John Mahama had instructed his ministry to support the event fully.

As part of the government’s involvement, Mr Ablakwa appointed two senior Ministry of Foreign Affairs officials to join the Local Organising Committee. Their appointments are in addition to a ministry staff member who is already serving on the committee.

The visit concluded with Rev. Wengam presenting the minister with a Bible. He urged Mr Ablakwa to allow the Word of God to guide him as he leads the country’s foreign affairs sector.
