Ghana’s Black Queens moved closer to the next round of the 2028 Olympic Games qualification campaign with a 3-0 first-leg win over Mauritius in the second round of the African qualifiers.
The result gives Ghana a significant advantage before the return fixture in Ghana on Tuesday, 13 October. Mauritius must overturn a three-goal deficit to keep their hopes of progressing alive.
Ghana imposed themselves early in the match, taking control before Mauritius had time to settle. Abigail Kim opened the scoring in the 16th minute, giving the Black Queens an early lead.
The visitors extended their advantage only eight minutes later. Alice Kusi found the net to make it 2-0 and put Ghana firmly in control of the tie.
Mauritius struggled to deal with Ghana’s attacking pressure as the first half progressed. The hosts were unable to find a response before the interval, and Ghana added a third goal in stoppage time.
Benedicte Simon completed the scoring with a long-range effort, sending the Black Queens into half-time with a three-goal advantage.
Mauritius improved after the break and looked for a way back into the contest. However, the hosts were unable to convert that improvement into a goal, with Ghana maintaining their clean sheet through to the final whistle.
The victory leaves Ghana in a strong position ahead of the second meeting between the sides. The Black Queens now return home aiming to complete the tie and secure their place in the next round of the qualification process.
The second leg will be played in Ghana on Tuesday, 13 October. Ghana need to protect their three-goal lead, while Mauritius face the demanding task of reducing the deficit and ultimately overturning it to progress.
