Mahama tells new Electoral Commission deputies to act without favour

President John Dramani Mahama has instructed newly appointed Electoral Commission Deputy Chairpersons Emelia Afi Agbenyo and Joseph Kwaku Asamoah, Esq. to perform their duties impartially, saying he expects no special treatment for his government or party.

Speaking at their swearing-in ceremony on Monday, October 12, President Mahama urged the two officials to use their experience in the service of the people of Ghana.

He stressed that the Electoral Commission’s responsibility was to protect the integrity of the electoral process and ensure that all eligible citizens could participate.

“Ensure that every eligible citizen can participate in our electoral process and that every valid vote counts and reflects the will of the people,” he said.

“The duty is to the people of Ghana; discharge your duty without favoring any candidate or party. I expect no preferential treatment for myself, my government, and party.”

The appointments fill vacancies created by the departure of two senior Electoral Commission officials and add to the commission’s leadership as it undertakes its electoral responsibilities.

Emelia Afi Agbenyo is Deputy Director of Operations at the Ghana TVET Service. Dr. Joseph Kweku Asamoah, who has also been identified as Joseph Kwaku Asamoah, Esq., is a former Director of Finance at the Electoral Commission.

The changes followed the resignation of Dr. Bossman Asare and the retirement of Mr. Samuel Tettey.

Dr. Bossman Asare, who was responsible for Corporate Affairs, resigned with effect from July 31, 2026, to return to academia at the University of Ghana.

Mr. Samuel Tettey, who served as Deputy Chairperson responsible for Operations, left the commission after reaching the mandatory retirement age.

Dr. Asamoah is a law lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). Before his appointment, he held several senior positions at the Electoral Commission, including Director of Finance, Director of the Training Centre and Head of Audit.

President Mahama said the new deputy chairpersons must ensure that the commission carries out its mandate fairly, with the interests of Ghana’s voters at the centre of its work.
