President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Minister of Finance to allocate GH¢300 million in the 2027 Budget to build 250 apartments for police officers.
The proposed housing project is intended to reduce overcrowding in police barracks and improve accommodation for personnel.
Mr Mahama announced the plan on Tuesday, October 13, during the commissioning of an ultramodern 85-bed ward complex at the Ghana Police Hospital.
He said the investment formed part of wider measures to strengthen the capacity of Ghana’s security services while reducing the risks faced by officers in the course of their duties.
“There is still more good news. I have requested the Minister of Finance to provide GH¢300 million in the 2027 Budget to construct 250 new apartments for the Police to ease congestion in some of your barracks,” he said.
The President said better accommodation would complement other government initiatives focused on the welfare and operational effectiveness of the Ghana Police Service.
He also linked the planned apartments to the expansion of the Police Hospital, describing both projects as part of a broader effort to reinforce national security.
“These measures, together with the expansion of the police hospital, are part of our efforts to strengthen the Services’ capacity to keep our country safe while reducing the risk faced by its personnel,” he said.
Mr Mahama further announced plans to provide the Ghana Police Service with more armoured vehicles and protective equipment.
A second batch of 40 armoured vehicles is expected to arrive in the coming weeks, he said. The delivery will follow the handover of 50 vehicles to the service in December 2025.
The government is also procuring additional body armour for officers deployed on operational duties, according to the President.
The housing development, hospital expansion, vehicles and protective equipment are intended to support both the working conditions and the operational capacity of police personnel.
