Ghana’s Deputy Minister-designate for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, James Gyakye Quayson, has firmly restated his opposition to LGBTQ+ rights, declaring that he would resist any attempt to promote or legalise such practices in the country.
Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Friday, Mr Quayson, who is also the MP for Assin North, said his stance is rooted in personal convictions and cultural values he has held for decades, both in Ghana and abroad.
“As a true African, I’m not in support of LGBTQ,” he told the Committee. “I was in Canada when LGBTQ was liberalised, but I was one of the people who campaigned against it. So I will never be in support of it.”

Mr Quayson lived in Canada for 42 years before returning to Ghana to take up a political career. He noted that his beliefs echo those of many Ghanaians, insisting that traditional values remain at odds with same-sex relationships.
His comments come amid ongoing national debate over Ghana’s controversial anti-LGBTQ bill, currently under consideration in Parliament. The bill has drawn international criticism, with rights groups urging Ghana to protect LGBTQ+ individuals from discrimination and criminalisation.
Supporters of the bill, however, argue it is necessary to preserve Ghanaian cultural values and norms.
Mr Quayson’s nomination to a sensitive diplomatic role, where Ghana’s human rights record may come under scrutiny, places his views under particular attention.
The Committee is expected to submit its report on his nomination to the full House for approval or rejection in the coming days.
