The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) says it is preparing to take legal action against individuals who falsely present themselves as having earned academic titles such as “Doctor” and “Professor” without following recognised academic pathways.
According to the Commission, the misuse of these titles, particularly by those who obtain honorary degrees from unaccredited institutions, has become increasingly common and poses a threat to academic integrity in the country.
“This growing trend is not only misleading, but also unacceptable,” said Professor Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, Director General of GTEC. “We are putting systems in place to begin prosecuting those who falsely use these academic titles.”

He clarified that while accredited institutions may confer honorary degrees, recipients are not permitted to use those distinctions as if they were earned through formal study and research.
“You may be honoured with a title, but that doesn’t make you a PhD holder or a professor in the academic sense,” Professor Jinapor Abdulai added.
GTEC says it will work closely with law enforcement and accreditation bodies to identify and sanction offenders. The Commission is also urging the public to verify academic claims and report suspected cases of academic fraud.
The move is part of broader efforts by GTEC to maintain the credibility of Ghana’s higher education system and protect genuine academic achievements from being undermined.
