Sports Minister Kofi Adams has praised Black Stars head coach Otto Addo for steering Ghana to the brink of World Cup qualification, but admits he remains “not fully satisfied” with the coach’s performance.
Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express, the Buem MP described Addo as “lucky” and said that although Ghana are just one point away from securing a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, there are still major concerns about some of the tactical decisions made during matches.
“Well, he has been lucky, but there are still concerns,” Mr Adams said.
“Sometimes even he admits maybe I should have made a substitution, urged them on, or used a player in a different role.”
Despite his reservations, the Minister stopped short of calling the coach incompetent.
“I can’t say that he’s totally incompetent… I’m not a coach. I love the game and I analyse it, but I am not satisfied.”
Mr Adams admitted that watching the Black Stars has often been stressful, even during wins.
“Yes, he’s qualified, but I have sat on some hooks and nails. I’ve had to get up to use the washroom by force,” he joked.
When asked directly if Otto Addo is the right man to lead Ghana to the World Cup, the Minister was cautious.
“I can’t answer that question now… We still have games ahead. If I answer, I create a situation.”
He further clarified that the final decision on Addo’s future does not lie with him.
“The minister doesn’t take those decisions. The Ghana Football Association manages the national team. I can’t say whether we are retaining or dismissing the coach.”
However, he acknowledged that “decisions will have to be made” regarding the coaching setup as the tournament approaches.
Ghana’s 5-0 victory over the Central African Republic in Morocco has put the Black Stars on the verge of their fifth World Cup appearance, but the debate over whether Otto Addo should continue remains very much alive.
