GoldBod pledges support for Pete Edochie’s African youth mentorship project

The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has backed veteran Nigerian actor Pete Edochie’s African Youth Mentorship Initiative, a programme intended to inspire, mentor and develop young people across Africa.

The commitment was made after Edochie paid a courtesy visit to GoldBod Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi at the organisation’s headquarters in Accra on Tuesday, October 6.

The initiative is part of Edochie’s wider African Legacy Project, which also includes a new book and a documentary film. Together, the project’s youth development efforts are aimed at reaching about 500,000 young Africans.

“We count ourselves in. We’ll be part and parcel of this inspiring project because we have the youth at heart,” Mr. Gyamfi stated.

He praised Edochie for using the knowledge and experience gained during his decades-long career to support the development of young Africans. Mr. Gyamfi said the project went beyond the actor’s work in entertainment, addressing personal development, leadership and the future direction of Africa.

The meeting also revealed that GoldBod and its activities feature in Edochie’s new book.

Mr. Gyamfi said he was surprised and honoured by the inclusion, which he viewed as a sign of Edochie’s increasing interest in Africa’s economic development and the responsible management of the continent’s natural resources.

According to Mr. Gyamfi, Edochie’s advocacy shows that his contribution to Africa extends beyond his long career in the film industry. He specifically pointed to the actor’s calls for Africans to exercise greater sovereignty over the continent’s mineral resources and to ensure that natural wealth makes a meaningful contribution to the development of African societies.

During the engagement, Mr. Gyamfi also outlined government efforts to reshape Ghana’s gold sector since GoldBod was established in October 2025.

He said Ghana repatriated US$10.8 billion from gold in 2025, while the cedi appreciated by 41 per cent against the US dollar during the same year. Ghana also ended 2025 with 5.7 months of import cover, and inflation fell from 23.3 per cent to about five per cent.

Mr. Gyamfi attributed part of that progress to measures designed to give Ghana greater control over the trading and management of its gold resources, while ensuring that income from the country’s minerals benefits the Ghanaian population.

The partnership brings together African cultural legacy, youth empowerment and economic sovereignty. Edochie’s project seeks to turn his experience in entertainment into a platform for influencing the next generation, while GoldBod’s support complements its youth-focused interventions and contributes to wider discussions about Africa’s resources and development.

The collaboration reflects a shared aim of equipping young Africans with mentorship and knowledge, while strengthening their understanding of the continent’s heritage, economic potential and responsibility for its future.
