Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak will contest the 2026 Democracy Cup on Friday, 28 August, with the winners potentially earning the chance to play in the United States next year.
The third edition of the competition will be decided at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, where the two Ghanaian clubs will meet for the trophy.
A proposal submitted to Parliament and seen by JoySports says the winning side could be invited to Antelope Valley, California, in May 2027. There, it would face a partner team as part of the BABA Festival.
The proposal was submitted by Ambassador Christian P. Richards Jr., the founder and president of Choosing Independence. It was contained in a letter dated 18 August 2026 and addressed to the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror.
Under the plan, the Democracy Cup would extend its international profile to Los Angeles, with the champions travelling to California as representatives of the competition.
The proposed fixture would be included in the BABA Festival, an event designed to build stronger links between Africa and the African-American diaspora.
Festival organisers are seeking to establish Ghana’s Parliament as a strategic partner. Their plans include incorporating the Democracy Cup, alongside Parliament’s civic engagement work through sport, into the festival’s programme and communications.
The proposal says the game would offer an opportunity to take the Democracy Cup’s themes of unity, democracy and civic engagement to the African-American community.
It would also allow Ghanaians living in the diaspora and African Americans to celebrate Ghanaian football together, while helping to deepen cultural connections between the groups.
Organisers have described the proposed match as a natural continuation of the Democracy Cup’s earlier international activities. They have also indicated that they are prepared to work with Parliament on the practical arrangements, including the game’s logistics, schedule and format.
The proposal remains before Parliament and has not yet been confirmed as an agreement.
That means the immediate focus remains on Friday’s final. Victory would give either Asante Kotoko or Hearts of Oak the 2026 Democracy Cup trophy, while also opening the possibility of representing the tournament in California in May 2027.
The potential trip would give the winner an international fixture beyond Ghana and place the Democracy Cup within a wider cultural programme aimed at strengthening relations between Ghana, Africa and the African-American diaspora.
For now, however, the California opportunity is dependent on the outcome at Baba Yara Sports Stadium. The club that prevails in the meeting between Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak could become the first 2026 Democracy Cup champion with the prospect of a United States appearance attached to its victory.
