The Government of Ghana has announced a revision of curfew hours for Bawku Municipality and its surrounding areas in the Upper East Region, following continued security concerns in the area.
According to a statement released by the Ministry for the Interior and signed by Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the new curfew will now run daily from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., effective Sunday, July 27, 2025, until further notice. The decision, the Ministry said, was based on the advice of the Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and executed through an Executive Instrument.
Authorities are urging local residents, including chiefs, elders, youth groups, and community leaders to remain calm and to commit to peaceful dialogue in the face of ongoing tensions in the region.
“The government appeals to all residents to exercise restraint in these trying times and to channel their efforts toward peacebuilding using non-violent means,” the statement urged.
In a further effort to reduce violence, the government reiterated a total ban on the carrying of arms, ammunition, or any offensive weapons in the affected areas. It warned that individuals found in violation of this directive would face arrest and prosecution.
Bawku, a municipality long affected by ethnic tensions and intermittent conflict, has been under curfew for years, with the government periodically reviewing restrictions based on prevailing security assessments.
While many residents have expressed fatigue with the prolonged curfews, authorities maintain the measure is necessary to prevent the escalation of violence and to safeguard lives and property.
Officials say they remain committed to restoring peace in the region and are working closely with local stakeholders and security forces to de-escalate tensions.
