Barcelona unveil Rodri as €75m midfield statement signing from Manchester City

FC Barcelona have officially unveiled Rodri as their latest major signing, completing a high-profile move that brings the 2026 World Cup Golden Ball winner and 2024 Ballon d’Or recipient back to Spain.

The midfielder joins from Manchester City on a four-year contract in a transfer reportedly worth €75m. His arrival is one of the most significant deals in Spanish football and represents Barcelona’s intention to compete again for the biggest domestic and European honours.

Rodri joins the Catalan club at the height of his career after another outstanding season for both club and country. He played a key role in Spain’s success at the 2026 World Cup, where his performances earned him the Golden Ball award as the tournament’s best player.

The move also marks a return to Spain for the 30-year-old, who had reportedly attracted interest from several of Europe’s leading clubs. Real Madrid were among those interested, but Rodri ultimately selected Barcelona and will now begin a new chapter at Camp Nou.

Rodri spent seven highly successful seasons with Manchester City after joining the English champions in 2019. During his time in England, he established himself as one of the world’s leading defensive midfielders and became a central figure in City’s period of dominance.

He helped Manchester City win four consecutive Premier League titles as well as the UEFA Champions League, while also earning numerous individual honours. His consistency, tactical intelligence and influence in possession made him one of the most important players in the club’s recent history.

Barcelona believe Rodri can bring experience, defensive authority and greater control to their midfield. He will reunite with Spanish international team-mates including Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi, while also joining a midfield group that includes Pedri and Dani Olmo.

The signing is expected to strengthen Barcelona as they seek to maintain their grip on LaLiga. The club are also targeting a more serious challenge in the UEFA Champions League, a competition they have not won since 2015.

Rodri’s leadership and winning mentality could prove especially important as Barcelona attempt to close the gap at the highest level of European football. His experience of competing for major trophies with Manchester City, alongside his success with Spain, gives the club a player accustomed to pressure on the biggest stages.

His official unveiling therefore represents more than the completion of a major transfer. It is a statement of Barcelona’s ambition and a sign that the Catalan club believe they are ready to challenge once more for the most important prizes in world football.

The four-year agreement gives Barcelona a long-term midfield leader, while the reported €75m fee underlines the scale of their investment in a player who has already achieved success at international and club level. Rodri’s return to Spain, following seven seasons in England, now adds another major chapter to his career.
