Andy Yiadom joins AFC Wimbledon on five-month deal to bolster Johnnie Jackson’s defence

AFC Wimbledon have completed the signing of experienced defender Andy Yiadom on a five-month deal, after the 34-year-old spent several weeks training with Johnnie Jackson’s squad.

Yiadom brings almost 400 appearances across the English Football League’s three divisions, along with more than a decade of experience in English football. His arrival gives Wimbledon additional defensive cover, leadership and versatility for the remainder of his short-term spell.

The former Reading captain had the opportunity to familiarise himself with the squad before the move was formally completed. His performances in training were enough to persuade manager Jackson that he could make an immediate contribution.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to play for Wimbledon and I’m ready to give my all for the team,” Yiadom said. “I’m really excited to get involved in the games that we have coming up.”

Jackson said Yiadom’s influence had already been evident during his time with the team.

“Andy has been training with us for a number of weeks and has really impressed,” the Wimbledon manager said. “He has vast experience of the level, brings character and leadership and much needed cover in defensive positions.”

Yiadom began establishing himself in English football at Barnet, where he made 177 appearances. Although he was initially used mainly as a winger, he adapted successfully to the right-back position and became a reliable defender.

His most significant campaign at Barnet came in 2014/15, when the club won the Conference title. Yiadom’s performances during that season earned him selection in the league’s Team of the Year.

That recognition led to a move to Barnsley in 2016. He continued his development at Oakwell and was appointed the club’s captain during the 2017/18 season, underlining the leadership qualities that have remained a feature of his career.

Yiadom moved to Reading in 2018 after his Barnsley contract expired. He spent the next eight years with the Berkshire club, making 253 appearances and becoming one of their senior figures.

His contribution to Reading was recognised at the end of the 2021/22 season, when he was named the club’s Player of the Season.

The defender has also represented Ghana internationally, adding international experience to a career built largely in the English game.

At AFC Wimbledon, Yiadom will now aim to use that background to help strengthen Jackson’s side and contribute during the club’s upcoming matches. For Wimbledon, the deal provides a proven defensive option and another experienced voice within the squad.

For Yiadom, the move offers the chance to continue playing at a high level and show that his knowledge and leadership can still make an important difference.
