The Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, has commenced a hunger strike while in police custody, his lawyer has disclosed.
According to his counsel, Enoch Afoakwa, the action is a form of protest against what Abronye considers political persecution following his arrest and subsequent two-week remand by the Accra Circuit Court.
“Abronye is a man full of life. He knows this is mere political persecution, and he is hopeful that his liberty will soon be restored,” Afoakwa told reporters.
He further explained that the hunger strike was both a symbolic demonstration and a measure of self-preservation. “Yes, he is on a hunger strike. He is doing this in furtherance of democracy,” he said.
Afoakwa added that his client had refused both food and water out of fear for his safety. “Once you are treated as though you have committed a treasonable offence, can you trust the same people when they bring you water or food? He is doing this to protect his life under the circumstances,” the lawyer emphasized.
Abronye is facing charges of publication of false news and offensive conduct conducive to the breach of peace.
He was first remanded on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, after making his initial appearance in court. The charges relate to allegations that he claimed on television that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) attended all strategic meetings of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at Akwatia, and further described IGP Tetteh Yohuno as “the most corrupt” in the country’s history.
Abronye has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is expected to reappear in court on Friday, September 19, 2025.
