Former Greater Accra Regional Chairman Sammy Crabbe has formed a unity alliance with fellow New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairmanship candidate John Boadu, just hours before voting begins at the party’s National Delegates Conference.
Crabbe announced the move in a signed statement on official letterhead dated Saturday, October 3, 2026. He said the agreement was intended to bring the party together and described it as an alliance rather than a withdrawal from the contest.
The statement said: “Together, our experience in party management and our programmes to unite and motivate the rank and file will move the party forward. With John as Chairman, we will institutionalise unity and discipline.”
Crabbe, who had been campaigning under the name “Sammy Crabbe for National Chairman 2026”, said he would work with Boadu to deliver their shared plans.
“I will work side by side with him to see these programmes implemented, so that every member of our party feels heard, valued and motivated,” he stated.
Addressing his supporters directly, Crabbe said his backing for Boadu should not be interpreted as simply abandoning his own campaign.
“To my supporters: a vote for John is a vote for me. This is not a stepping down. It is a stepping up. It is an alliance,” he said.
The announcement came as the NPP gathered at Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi for its National Delegates Conference, where new national executives are being elected ahead of the 2028 general elections.
More than 7,100 delegates are expected to vote at 31 polling centres.
Four candidates were cleared to contest the chairmanship: Boadu, Crabbe, former National Chairman Paul Afoko and former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko. During the ballot-position selection on September 9, Boadu drew No.1, while Crabbe drew No.2.
Boadu had earlier announced the development in a social media post, writing: “Sammy Crabbe, an aspiring National Chairman of the NPP, has stepped down from the race and thrown his support behind John Boadu. Let’s win together!”
Crabbe’s statement offered a more qualified account of the decision, stressing that the arrangement was a partnership rather than a straightforward withdrawal.
Boadu has also received the backing of the camp of former Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, after Boasiako withdrew from the contest in August.
Recent polls conducted by Global InfoAnalytics and Prof. Smart Sarpong placed Boadu well ahead among all respondents, with 46.5%. Agyarko was on 24.8%, followed by Afoko on 9.1% and Crabbe on 5.5%.
