New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has honoured former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, saying their major social policies had changed the lives of Ghanaians and would be remembered permanently.
Addressing the NPP National Delegates Conference at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3, 2026, Dr. Bawumia said the party had a strong record of delivering programmes that directly benefited ordinary people.
He said policies introduced during the two former presidents’ administrations had widened access to healthcare and education while providing an important basis for Ghana’s development.
Under President Kufuor, he highlighted the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), the School Feeding Programme and Free Maternal Care. He also pointed to the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy introduced under President Akufo-Addo.
“Remembering the party’s forebears, former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, their social interventions like NHIS, School Feeding and Free SHS will never be forgotten,” he said.
Dr. Bawumia also praised the Danquah-Busia-Dombo tradition, which he said was based on the belief that freedom, enterprise and the rule of law provide the foundations for prosperity.
He expressed particular appreciation to the Ashanti Region, describing Kumasi as the heart of the NPP. He said the region had remained loyal to the party through periods of success and difficulty.
“When our tent needed holding up, Ashanti was one of the pillars that held us up. On behalf of every member of our party, I say ‘medaase’- Thank you,” he added.
The NPP flagbearer also recognised the contribution of Acting National Chairman Danquah Smith Buttey, saying he had helped stabilise the party following its defeat in 2024.
He separately thanked former Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, and National Chairman Stephen Ayesu Ntim for their committed service to the party.
