GFA President Urges Government to Ease Burden on CAF-Qualified Clubs

President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, has appealed to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to provide targeted financial support for Ghanaian football clubs competing in CAF competitions.

Speaking at the GFA’s 31st Ordinary Congress, Okraku made a heartfelt call for the establishment of a national support fund aimed at easing the financial strain on clubs that represent Ghana on the African stage.

“We also call on the government to establish a dedicated national support fund for clubs representing Ghana in the CAF-organised competitions such as the Champions League and the Confederation Cup,” he said.

“These clubs carry the national flag and indeed need logistical, financial and institutional support to succeed on the African continent.”

Currently, clubs that qualify for the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup such as reigning Premier League champions Bibiani GoldStars and FA Cup winners Asante Kotoko are left to fund their campaigns largely on their own. Many rely on gate proceeds, private sponsors, and fundraising efforts to cover travel, accommodation, and competition costs.

Okraku stressed that while the passion and commitment of these clubs are commendable, it is increasingly difficult for them to remain competitive without structured financial backing.

Also on the international front, Police Ladies, winners of the Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League are set to compete in the WAFU B Women’s Champions League Qualifiers. The team too faces similar funding challenges.

Ghana’s representation in continental football continues to draw attention, but club officials and supporters have long argued that a lack of government support limits their potential. Okraku’s appeal is seen as a direct challenge to the government to take a more proactive role in supporting football development beyond national teams.
