Youth clean up Wa Naa’s palace to mark National Sanitation Day

As part of efforts to rid the Wa Municipality of sanitation related diseases, some residents of Wa spent several hours cleaning up the Wa Naa’s Palace to mark the National Sanitation Day in Wa.

The Day organised by Wa Municipal Assembly, saw the active participation of members of the Assembly, the security agencies and the teeming youth of Wa, who took turns to distil some choked gutters around the palace.

Some residents also spent several hours cleaning gutters and surroundings along the principal streets of the town, while a few onlookers, especially petty traders were seen idling during the exercise.

The Wa Central Market and the main Wa Lorry Station were tidied up, making the places beautiful and attractive, as well as creating a healthy environment for travelers and other visitors.

Addressing the market women and member of the Ghana Private, Roads Transport Union, Mr. Issahaku Nuhu-Putiaha, Wa Municipal Chief Executive, took a swipe at the lackadaisical attitude of some residents towards the National Sanitation Day exercise.

He said there were still some residents in the Municipality who felt that it was the responsibility of the Municipal Assembly and the Zoomlion Company to come and clean up their surroundings and the garbage they that they generated.

That attitude, he said, was wrong and misplaced because the Zoomlion and the Municipal Assembly were only to complement the efforts of individuals and not to be considered as: “Father Christmas to doing everything for the people for free”.

Mr. Nuhu –Putiaha said the total development of the Municipality rested so much on the citizens’ participation and not the Municipal Assembly alone as perceived by many.

He urged residents to do what was expected of them, so that collectively they would make Wa a beautiful and healthy place to live in, pointing out that sanitation issues were life risking issues and nobody should take them for granted.
