World Vision commended for providing health centre

Akokoa (B/A), Aug. 27, GNA – Ms Mercy Duako, midwife in charge of the Akokoa health centre in the Atebubu-Amantin district of Brong Ahafo has commended World Vision International for providing the facility for the benefit of the 15 communities in the area. She told the Ghana News Agency at Akokoa that the NGO had also been supportive of the education of the youth in the area through the granting of scholarships to needy but promising students. The midwife acknowledged the high patronage of the health facility by the people, including nursing mothers, who attend ante-natal care and child welfare programmes.

Ms Duako noted that, the most prevalent disease in the area, was malaria and intestinal related diseases, especially diarrhoea, but said health officials had been advising the people on how to overcome it, and the use of treated mosquito nets to guard against malaria. She attributed the cases of diarrhoea to inadequate potable water system in the area, saying, anytime the only borehole broke down, the people use water from the streams.

The midwife appealed to the District Assembly to arrange for a small town water system to promote the good health of the people. Madam Duako advised the people to avoid premarital sex and the sharing of common razors to avoid contracting HIV/AIDS.
