FC Zurich have officially parted ways with Ghanaian forward Daniel Afriyie Barnieh after the two parties reached a mutual agreement to terminate his contract.
The 24-year-old, who joined the Swiss outfit in January 2023 from Ghanaian giants Hearts of Oak, exits the club just 18 months into a three-and-a-half-year deal.
Barnieh featured in 50 competitive matches for Zurich, scoring two goals and contributing four assists. Despite flashes of promise, the former Ghana U20 star found it difficult to secure a regular starting role in the squad.
In a statement released on Thursday, FC Zurich confirmed the departure.
“FC Zurich announces that Ghanaian striker Daniel Afriyie is leaving the city-based club. His contract has been terminated by mutual consent. FC Zurich thanks Daniel Afriyie for his commitment and wishes him all the best for the future.”
Barnieh arrived in Europe with high expectations after impressing in the Ghana Premier League and representing the Black Stars. However, limited minutes and intense competition in Zurich meant he never quite lived up to his potential at the club.
Now a free agent, Barnieh is expected to weigh up new opportunities this summer, with interest reportedly coming from clubs in both Europe and Africa.
As he embarks on the next chapter of his career, Barnieh will be looking for a platform where he can rediscover his form and prove himself once again on the international stage.
