Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH) has declared an indefinite strike, effective immediately, over a dispute regarding union representation on university governing councils.
The strike follows the union’s ultimatum expiring on July 3, after authorities recognized a minority union, TEWU-TUC, as the official workers’ representative, despite TEWU-GH’s majority membership.
TEWU-GH is demanding the withdrawal of TEWU-TUC’s appointment and verification of the majority union by the Chief Labour Officer. The union insists on a transparent and democratic process to determine union representation.
“We remain committed to peaceful engagement with authorities but will not compromise on our demands or retreat in the face of adversity,” the union stated. TEWU-GH has called on members to participate fully in the strike and unite in solidarity.
The union’s demands include:
– Immediate withdrawal of TEWU-TUC’s appointment
– Verification of the majority union by the Chief Labour Officer
– A transparent and democratic process to determine union representation
TEWU-GH has appealed for solidarity from fellow labour unions and stakeholders.
