Seven women out of the nine who contested the National Democratic Congress (NDC) primaries in the Eastern Region, have proved their worth by beating their male counterparts to represent the party in the 2016 elections.
Five of them put up a fierce contest with two or more male counterparts and won, whiles two including the Deputy Eastern Regional Minister, Ms Mavis Ama Frimpong, went unopposed in the Abirem and Fanteakwa South constituencies respectively.
Those who dropped the men are, Ms Benedicta Quartey, who beat three men at Nsawam; Lawrencia Dziwonu, who beat his male counterpart at Akuapem South; Margaret Ansei, beat two males to emerge winner at Suhum; whiles Shirley Naana Ampem, beat a male counterpart to capture the Lower West Akyem constituency nomination.
However, Mrs Georgina Opoku and Mrs Margaret Ansah, lost to their male counterparts at Abetifi and Akuapem North constituencies respectively.
Apart from the Deputy Regional Minster and Mrs Margaret Ansah, who were making their second attempt, it was a first attempt for all the others.
The Deputy Minister in 2012 represented the NDC in the parliamentary elections in the Abirem constituency after beating two men at the primaries.
Mrs Ansah, who lost the Akuapem North primaries, also in 2012 represented the NDC in the constituency after battling it out with two male contestants.
