President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to implement the recommendations of the National Constitution Review Committee.
Speaking at the Post-2024 Elections Evaluation Dialogue in Koforidua, President Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening Ghana’s democratic processes and safeguarding national unity.
“As President of the Republic, I reaffirm my unwavering commitment to strengthening our democracy, preserving our peace and upholding the dignity of every Ghanaian,” he said. “Let me assure that I will do everything in my strength and power to ensure that the recommendations of the national constitutional review committee are implemented.”
The Constitution Review Committee, established by President Mahama in January 2025, is currently gathering views and recommendations from citizens and institutions across the country. Key issues being considered include:
– Lowering the minimum age for presidential candidates
– Introducing a maximum age cap for presidential candidates
– Separating powers by abolishing the practice of appointing MPs as ministers
– Restructuring the Council of State
– Redefining the role of chiefs in local governance
– Boosting women’s political participation
– Empowering anti-corruption agencies
The committee has a six-month mandate to review Ghana’s 1992 Constitution and provide actionable recommendations to the government.
