Woman dies while trying to save grandson

Ama Oparebea, 56, got drowned in an old abandoned mining pit in an attempt to rescue her two-year-old grandson, Desmond Opare who fell in the abandoned pit at Hia, a cottage near Pramkese in the Kwaebibrem District of the Eastern Region.

The body has since been deposited at the St. Dominic Hospital Morgue at Akwatia awaiting autopsy.

The Eastern Regional Head of Regional Public Relations Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, Assistant Superintendent of Police ASP Yaw Nketia-Yeboah confirming the incident to Brytfmonline.com said it occurred on July 18, at about 10:30 am.

ASP Yaw Nketia-Yeboah said the Assembly member for the area, Evans Akpaku reported the incident to the Police at Kase that the deceased went to farm with her daughter in-law, Grace Korkor, 22, and the grandson to harvest rice.

He said while the two were busily working on the farm, they realized that Desmond Opare was nowhere to be found, they mounted a search on the farm which they later on found out that he has fell in an abandoned old mining pit near to their farm.

ASP Yaw Nketia–Yeboah indicated that the deceased who could not stand to watch her grandson to dead in that circumstances quickly jumped into the pit containing some volume of water and with the help of the daughter in-law managed to rescue the little boy.

He said the deceased while climbing up from the pit suddenly slipped and fell back into the pit and got drowned.

The Eastern Regional Police spokesperson (ASP Yaw Nketia–Yeboah) said preliminary investigation into the incidence confirmed the narration by the Assembly Member of the area and inspection on the body reveals no marks of violence on the deceased.
