Wildfire destroys eight houses and food stocks

Sekuruwa (Ash), Feb. 8, GNA – A raging fire has left a trail of massive destruction of property and food stocks running into thousands of cedis in the Asante-Mampong Municipality. Sekuruwa, a predominantly food crop farming community, was the worst hit and had eight houses completely leveled. Chief Superintendent Edward Oduro Kwateng, the Divisional Police Commander, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Monday that there were no casualties.

Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service battled for hours to put out the fire which started at dawn last Saturday. The fire is believed to have been caused by the activities of hunters at Atonsuagya, another village which is four kilometers away from Sukuruwa. The Police Commander, who was at the scene of the disaster with the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Daniel Appau Ohyeamang, said no arrest has been made. Meanwhile, the MCE has directed the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) to come to the aid of the victims with relief items. He pledged to supply school children in the community with uniforms and books. 8 Feb. 10
