Weija Dam spillage: No compensation for residents

The Ghana Water Company says it cannot pay compensation to residents living around the Weija dam who have been advised to evacuate the area.

The company plans to spill excess water from the dam any moment from now and has asked residents living in affected communities to evacuate to avoid disaster.

But the residents have rejected the warning, demanding compensation before they relocate.

But the Ghana Water Company says it cannot pay the compensation.

Communications Manager for the company, Stanley Martey said: “It’s not our mandate to be compensating people who have built in unauthorized [locations]…”

He directed affected residents to go to the district assemblies for compensation if they have permits for putting up such structures.
