The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) says it does not have any intention of striking after today’s developments, given the positive feedback following the AMA’s directive.
Speaking to Daily Post Ghana about their planned strike, the union’s PRO, Alhaji Abass Imoro, disclosed that the current situation looks promising, and after tomorrow they’re expecting that all traders marketing at bus stops in the Greater Accra Region will be evacuated to enhance the efficiency of their work.
“We’re still looking at how things will evolve after the deadline of AMA’s directive and we’re positive that all traders at bus stops will be evacuated by close of ” he stated.
However, he asserted that if the situation doesn’t improve in the days ahead, the group will reconsider its position.
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), announced earlier that commercial drivers across the country would embark on a nationwide strike starting today Monday 19th May 2025. In view of that, no commercial vehicles, including trotros and taxis, will operate.
The intended strike was to demonstration to protest indiscriminate and unauthorized roadside trading activities by businesses.
They claimed the activities by some small-scale businesses along the road had frustrated many drivers and resulted in unforeseen accidents.
Meanwhile, he disclosed that executives of the Union are in an emergency meeting with the Ministry of Transport to discuss talks over reducing transport fares as the cedi strengthens and fuel prices decrease.
Fuel prices had dropped sharply across Ghana as the cedi strengthens, bringing relief to motorists and prompting widespread adjustments by OMCs.
