WAEC to cancel results of cheating candidates

The West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) has cautioned candidates writing the May/June West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) that anyone caught with a mobile phone in an examination hall would have the entire results cancelled.

Mr. Patrick Sumailar Wayoe, the Sekondi Controller of WAEC, told the Ghana News Agency in Sekondi that previously an offending candidate only had a particular subject or paper cancelled, but now it would affect the entire results.

The comment follows a report that a candidate writing the examination had torn two pages of the answer booklet and had been reported to the WAEC headquarters in Accra for necessary action to be taken.

He, therefore, entreated the candidates to respect the WAEC Act 719 that spelt out the rules and regulations governing examinations to avert a brush with the law.

Commenting on some challenges encountered so far in the examination, Mr. Wayoe said some invigilators wrongfully distributed answer booklets for some subjects thus, creating shortages in core answer booklets.

He, however, said the anomaly had been reported and very soon more answer booklets would arrive from Accra to rectify the problem, assuring that, it would not delay the writing of the examination since those subjects affected would be written in two weeks’ time.

He, therefore, entreated the supervisors and invigilators to be extra vigilant to protect the sanctity of the examination.

In all, 242,152 candidates, comprising 126,919 males and 115,238 females in 809 examination centres nationwide are writing the May/June WASSCE and would end on May 16, 2014.
