Volta Region records 201 cholera cases

A total of 201 cholera cases have been recorded in the Volta Region, Mr Mathew Drafor, Head of Disease Surveillance Unit at the Regional Health Directorate said on Tuesday.

He said the increasing number of cases could be disastrous in the region.

Mr Drafor said this at a public forum organised by the Ho Rotary Club on cholera on the theme: “End Cholera Now.”

The target group are traders at the Ho central market.

Mr Drafor said it is surprising that from 60 cases on Friday, August 22, Ketu-South District recorded 110 cases on Tuesday, August 26 with two deaths.

He said Nkwanta South recorded 67 cases with three deaths, Ho-West, 12 cases, Ketu-North 10 cases and Ho, two cases.

Mr Drafor said the situation is getting out of hand and called for concerted efforts from stakeholders to address it.

He urged the public to be careful in handling dead persons.

Mr Kenneth Kponor, Municipal Director of National Commission on Civic Education expressed worry that despite regular education on radio, cholera cases are increasing and attributed it to lawlessness.

He said it is the responsibility of the individual to keep his or her environment clean, while those who compromise cleanliness should be prosecuted.

Mr Richard Ahiagbede, Municipal Environmental Officer said the Assembly is fumigating some areas in the communities to halt the spread of the disease.

Mr Rockson Dogbega, President of Ho Rotary Club said the forum became necessary in view of how fast the disease is spreading.

“Health, sanitation and water are part of our six thematic areas of operation and this forum is to help educate ourselves and our mothers who sell foodstuff to us to prevent the spread of the disease,” he said.

Mr Dogbega asked the participants to become health ambassadors and preach cleanliness, while refuse collectors should step-up their operations.
