Spanish side Villarreal CF has officially confirmed the signing of Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey on a two-year deal ahead of the 2025/26 season, a move made even more significant as the player navigates ongoing legal proceedings in England.
But the announcement also came with an open acknowledgement of the midfielder’s legal troubles in the UK.
“The club is also aware that the player is currently involved in legal proceedings in England,” the statement read.
“The player firmly maintains his innocence and denies all charges against him. The club respects the fundamental principle of the presumption of innocence and will await the outcome of the judicial process.”
Partey, who has earned over 50 caps for Ghana, enjoyed spells at UD Almería, RCD Mallorca, Atlético Madrid, where he won La Liga and the UEFA Super Cup and most recently Arsenal, where he lifted the FA Community Shield in 2023/24.
Despite the ongoing court case, Villarreal made clear that their decision was rooted in faith in due process and in the player’s professional integrity. However, they also issued a strong disclaimer on violence of any kind:
“Villarreal CF wishes to clearly reiterate its strong commitment to respect and diversity and firmly condemns any act of violence in all its forms, including gender-based violence, discrimination, racism, xenophobia, or any behaviour that undermines the dignity of individuals.”
Due to UK legal restrictions, the club declined to provide further comment on the details of the case.
While the legal matter remains unresolved, Villarreal has taken a bold but principled stance, placing trust in the judicial process and offering Partey the platform to focus on football, at least on the pitch.
