Former Deputy Minister of State Vicky Bright has withdrawn from Sunday’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primary to be held in the Okaikoi South Constituency.
Announcing her decision, Ms Bright said she had consulted her advisors as well as family members before making public the decision on Saturday, August 1.
Election of a 2016 parliamentary candidate for the party in Okaikoi South has been riddled with injunctions as the former legal advisor of ex-president John Agyekum Kufuor had challenged the educational certificates of incumbent Ahmed Arthur submitted to the vetting committee.
But in a statement on Friday, July 31, NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong gave the green light for the elections in the constituency – and that of Klottey Korle – to come off on Sunday.
Addressing a press conference a day before the elections, Ms Bright – who had held a British citizenship until 2007 – challenged the processes leading up to the primaries, saying they “go against all the tenets upon which our great party was founded”.
She described Sunday’s elections as “flawed” and “fraudulent”.
Her decision leaves Mr Arthur as likely to retain his seat.
