Winneba (C/R), Feb. 23, GNA – The United States Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Mary Carlin Yates on Tuesday visited the University of Education, Winneba to familiarize herself with the function of the university, particularly its Distance Learning programme.
Two ladies, Ms Sue Peppers and Ms Gwen Johnson from the Scaisdale High School in New York, who are on a visit to the country, accompanied her.
They were received on behalf of the University authorities by Professor Adrian Deffeer Amissah, Dean of School of Research and Graduate Studies of the University, Mr Justice Ayetey, Registrar, Dr Steve Sabote, Principal of the Kumasi Campus of the University and Mr Benjamin Kpodo, finance officer.
Briefing the visitors, Professor Amissah said the University is the only university in the sub-region responsible for the training of teachers from the basic to the university level.
He said presently, the UEW is handling about 7000 teachers receiving university education through the Distance Learning and pointed out that, “if these teachers were to leave their classrooms, you could imagine the problems it would create for the pupils”.
Professor Amissah said the University had drawn up Corporate Action Plan for the next five years to enable it achieve its aims and objectives.
The visitors were later led by the authorities to visit the Osagyefo Library, an ICT centre and the Institute for Educational Development and Extension (IEDE) of the University.
The Ambassador later presented 67 different books on Teacher Education and the encyclopaedia of the African and African American experience.
Professor Amissah received the books and thanked the Ambassador for her kind gesture.
