Wa, June 27, GNA- The Upper West Regional Secretariat of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has commended the government for the tarring of the ongoing 53-kilometre Bole-Bamboi road, which links the region to the southern part of the country. The Upper West Regional Industrial Relations Officer of the GPRTU, Mr. Nuhu Mahama made the commendation at a forum to elect executive officers for the Wa-Hamile and the Wa Tortoro branches of the union as well as the Wa-Techiman Express branch on Thursday in Wa. The speed at which the project was progressing is highly commendable and the Union must give praises when it was due, Mr Mahama said.
Some drivers and passengers plying the road who spoke to the Ghana News Agency were full of praise and commended government for its efforts at tarring the road, saying the completion of the road would facilitate free movement of goods and people from the region to the south and enhance the economic fortunes of the people.
The union however urged President John Agyekum Kufuor to do everything possible to ensure that work on the road was completed before he leaves office.
Mr Mahama gave the assurance that the union would complement government’s efforts by implementing its policies and programmes but pointed out that people should not misconstrue that to mean the union was an appendage of the NPP.
“Political or religious issues as well as any other issues that have the potential of dividing the people are not entertained in the union”, he said.
Mr Mahama called on young women, especially those from the three Northern Regions to develop interest in the driving profession, saying it was a noble profession, which was not exclusive for men. He observed that if more women join the profession, the carnage on the road would be minimised, as women were more careful on the road than their male counterparts.
On the re-denomination of the new Ghana cedis, he said members of the union were still not well informed about it.
He said nobody has come to educate the union about the exercise and appealed to the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) to do so. However, Mr. Kofi Adomah, Upper West Regional Director of the NCCE said the education campaign was ongoing and that the GPRTU would have its turn on Thursday.
Mr. Abdul-Samad Issah, Upper West Regional Information Officer, in reaction said his outfit was into the districts to educate the people on the re-denomination, noting: “our target is not on specific groups, our target is on the general public”.
