Two sisters perish in fire

Two sisters aged four and 14 met their death in the early hours of Monday when the wooden structure in which they were sleeping caught fire at Tema Newtown.

Emmanuella Quainor and Gifty Quainor were among nine relatives sleeping in the structure, which is attached to a drinking spot when the incident happened at about 0200 hours.

The bodies of the victims have been deposited at a mortuary by the Police.

The wooden structure and its entire contents were burnt by the fire which was believed to have been caused by a lighted candle.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer told the media that his officers faced challenges when they reached the scene because the access road was blocked with canopies mounted for funeral.

He said preliminary investigations indicated that there was power outage in the area and inhabitants of the structure had lighted a candle for light.

Mr Harrison Tetteh, a relative of the victims and survivor, said he was asleep when he felt intense heat and the fire.

He said he managed to wake up and opened the door for six others to escape but forgot about the children.
