Ticket racketeering hits MMT

Authorities at the Metro Mass Transport (MMT) are allegedly overseeing the exploitation of passengers by selling tickets at different prices to poor commuters at the Dunkwa On-Offin terminal; The Chronicle has learnt.

It has been gathered that the local MMT at Dunkwa has teamed up with women who ply their trade at the terminal to cheat passengers by shooting prices of tickets upward by GHc1. Apart from the deals at the Dunkwa terminal, the Kumasi MMT terminal has been accused of cheating commuters by increasing the price of tickets.

The Chronicle has gathered that the practice has prevailed for the last four months. The paper has learnt the first 15 seats of MMT buses in Dunkwa have always been sold at GHc10 instead of stipulated GHc9 by the state-run institution.

The exposé came to the fore following a series of complaints received by The Chronicle from passengers.

A commuter (name withheld) who spoke to this paper explained that in his quest to board an MMT bus from Dunkwa to Kumasi, MMT authorities told him the tickets were sold out, so he had to wait for the next bus.

“In a moment, a woman who sells soft drinks at the Dunkwa MMT terminal approached him saying she has some of the tickets for the bus bound for Kumasi” and demanded GHc10 for the tickets”. In an interaction with Mr. Kingsley, the Regional Manager of MMT, he said he had no report to that effect and assured to investigate the allegations.

He stressed that selling of ticket beyond stipulated price is illegal and punishable by law. According to him, in circumstances employees found culpable to the offence and misconduct are fired. He asked this reporter to provide enough evidence to assist in their investigation.
