Thugs Invade Car Park

Mr Amadu Al-Hassan, Manager of the car park at Makola Market in Accra yesterday called on government to provide maximum security to protect life and property at the market.

Mr Al-hassan told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Accra that there had been an increase of armed thugs around the park who harass and snatch money and other valuable things including mobile phones from customers creating an unstable situation at the park.

He said the thugs always parade around the gates to the park and at the restaurants inside the park and use the least opportunity to snatch bags and hand luggage and run away by wielding knives and sometimes pistols to escape arrest.

He said the situation was making life unbearable to both operators of the park and customers. He said, “unless the government intervenes the problem is bound to persist.”

Mr Al-Ahassan was not happy with vehicle owners who use the park without first declaring their valuable belongings to the guards but only come back to report of their missing items.

Those who park their vehicles without declaring their valuables to the security do so at their own risk, Mr Al-Ahassan said.

He said the park was built for an intake of 254 vehicles but due to pressure, over 600 vehicles are parked daily.

In a related issue, Mr Johnson Osei, manager of the Agbogboloshie Bus Terminal told GNA that there was the need for day and night police and military patrols to curb “wee” smokers and sellers from the terminal.

He said with Christmas around the corner, many people were finding unorthodox ways of making money hence the use of the bus terminal for illegal businesses.
