The Teachers and Educational Workers Union is blaming the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission for its indefinite strike which could disrupt exams in senior High Schools.
TEWU begun the indefinite strike on Monday July 23, after a two week ultimatum issued for the payment of retention premium to some TEWU members expired.
The strike coincides with the end of term exams in most Senior High Schools.
TEWU General Secretary, Muhammed Bogobiri in an interview with XYZ News said the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission is giving TEWU a raw deal.
“We sent a justification to the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and they didn’t acknowledge that they had received it. We sent a reminder and they didn’t even reply.
“So I believe that silence means that concerned so we also decided that we start putting down our tools” Mr. Bogobiri said.
Meanwhile, Public Relations Officer of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, Earl Ankrah had told XYZ News that the National Labour Commission must intervene to determine whether the strike by TEWU is legal or illegal.
“The institution in this country mandated to do that is the National Labour Commission, they will be able to pronounce, look into the issue and determine whether it is legal or illegal.
“The Fair Wages Commission is completely out, we have decided that the teaching profession is what we are targeting for retention premium and that is it”. **
