Tarkwa adopts new market days to boost trading

Tarkwa, July 10, GNA – The Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipal Assembly in collaboration with the traders at the Tarkwa Central Market, has adopted Mondays and Fridays as official market days to improve trading in the area.

Mrs. Christina Kobinah, the Municipal Chief Executive, said the market used to be very vibrant in the early 1960s and 1970s but due to poor patronage many traders abandoned the facility and were now conducting business along the main road.

She said that this has resulted in traffic congestion and the use of unauthorized places for trading within the Municipality.

Mrs Kobinah, who disclosed this in an interview with GNA in Tarkwa on Friday, said that the assembly rehabilitated the market at a cost of 260,000 Ghana cedis, undertook a decongestion exercise, and moved the traders back to the market but some of them have failed to go back.

She called on the traders to support the Municipality’s initiative saying “We believe the market days will transform and attract many people to buy foodstuffs, clothing, cooking utensils, and cereals among others at cheaper prices.”

Mr. Issa Abdulai, a trader, complained that market women at the Tarkwa Main Station persistently refused to relocate to the Central Market and appealed to the Assembly to ensure that all traders returned to the market.

Mrs. Patricia Nyarkoh, Queen Mother of the Tarkwa Central Market, pledged to cooperate with other market leaders to facilitate trading in the area.
