Tamale Schools Closed Down

Schools in the Tamale metropolis have been closed down until further notice following an alleged attack on some senior staff of the Tamale Metropolitan Directorate of Education which shares office premises with the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly (TMA).

This followed disturbances that ensured after an earlier attack on the Presiding Member (PM) of the assembly, Mr Abdul Rahman Hannan Gundaadow, by a group of people at the forecourt of the assembly on Monday.

A visit by newsmen to some schools in the metropolis showed no sign of school activities, while the Metropolitan Office of the Ghana Education Service (GES) had been closed down at the time of filing this report. Some of the schools visited were United Primary and JSS, Lamashegu A & B JSS, the Zo Simli Girls? JSS and Manhaliya Primary and JSS.

Others were the EP Early Childhood Development Centre, the Presbyterian Primary and JSS and the Sakasaka Primary and JSS. Efforts to get in touch with the GES Metropolitan Director to explain the reason for the closure of the schools proved futile, as she was said to be out of town. A teacher in the metropolis who pleaded anonymity confirmed in an interview that schools had been closed down until further notice.

Meanwhile, no arrest has been made yet by the police from Monday?s disturbances which left three people injured. The Deputy Regional Police Commander, Mr Kwabena Gyamera-Yeboah, indicated that the injured, who had so far lodged complaints with the police, were a Happy FM reporter, Mohammed Danaa, the PM and the Assembly member for Daatoyili, Mr Alhassan Imoro.
