Suspected Killer Remanded In Custody

Berekum (Brong Ahafo), 27 Oct.

The Berekum Circuit Court has remanded Bismarck Kwame Ennin, a 24-year-old suspected armed robber in prison custody until November 24, for allegedly stabbing two people to death at Sunyani last Wednesday when he was caught breaking into a car. Ennin had to be taken from Sunyani to Berekum for his first court appearance due to persistent threats of lynching by friends and relatives of his victims, who have vowed to revenge. Until this weekend, a group of angry crowd had been besieging the Sunyani Police Station daily hoping to lay hands on Ennin for instant justice, a situation which forced the police to take him to an unknown location. His remand followed submissions by Assistant Superintendent of Police Victor A detor of Sunyani that investigations into the case were inconclusive. He said for instance an autopsy was yet to be performed on the deceased, Mr. Kwadwo Amponsah and Mr. Adu-Gyamfi who were killed by Ennin as he tried to escape after being caught at dawn attempting to steal a tape-recorder from a car. ASP Adetor said the police would, therefore, need some time to enable them wrap up their investigations before the substantive case could be brought to court. Ennin, unemployed and a native of Dormaa Akwamu, last Wednesday, stabbed to death Mr. Amponsah for confronting him for breaking into a car of a neighbour. In his bid to escape arrest, Ennin according to the police again stabbed and fatally wounded Adu-Gyamfi on the left side of the chest after he mistook him for a member of a pursuing mob. Adu-Gyamfi, who was on his way to a nearby public place of convenience when the incident happened died last Thursday at the Sunyani Government Hospital apparently from the stabbing.
