Stakeholders to pursue water, sanitation and hygiene targets

Participants at the 25th Mole conference have resolved to continue supporting and pursuing the targets for water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), seeing as the millennium development goals are ending in 2015.

A statement issued by the participants said that there is the need to look beyond the millennium development goals (MDGs), for which Ghana might not meet the targets in the area of water, sanitation and hygiene.

The conference underscored the need to tilt away from formulation of policies and strategies, for which a lot has been done, to their implementation and the monitoring of progress to help accelerate the achievement of water, sanitation and hygiene goals.

They lauded the role of government statistical organizations in policy formulation, programme implementation and their efforts to monitor the activities of NGOs and the Coalition of NGOs in Water and Sanitation (CONIWAS), even though some of the NGOs and CONIWAS members are still non-compliant and are not cooperating.

The participants at the Mole conference have also committed themselves to work more intensively with government to reduce water, sanitation and hygiene-related diseases while exploring effective partnerships with the private sector and mobilizing the poor to find their own innovative solutions.

The Mole Conference series is the largest convergence of experts and stakeholders in the water, sanitation and hygiene arena.
