Sixteen Facilitators of the Non-Formal Education Division in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese District have been presented with bicycles and certificates for their dedication to duty. This is the third batch of Facilitators to be honoured. Speaking at the function at Abura Dunkwa, the District Organiser of the Division, Miss Margaret Forson, said more than three thousand 900 learners, the majority of whom are females, have passed out in the area. She said the literacy classes are involved in income-generating ventures like gari processing, soap making and oil palm production. Miss Forson appealed to the District Assembly to take care of the Division in its budget for next year to enable it sustain its activities. The District Co-ordinating Director Mr.. S.K. Abbiw, commended the Division for its good work in the area. An Educationist, Mr.. J.B.K. Payne, urged churches in the area to establish literacy classes for their members. The Headmaster of Aburaman Secondary School , Mr.. Osei Nkrumah, who chaired the function, asked the Facilitators to continue with their good work. Fifty-four Facilitators in the Aowin Suaman District have also been presented with bicycles at Enchi. The District Chief Executive, Mr.. Solomon Appiah, commended them for their hard work. He was, however, not happy about the lukewarm attitude of the people towards the programme. Mr.. Appiah, therefore, urged all Assemblymembers to show keen interest in the programme by taking part in the campaign and registration exercises to encourage the people to embrace it. The District Organiser of the Non-Formal Education Division, Mr.. Frank Poku-Gyetua, thanked the African Development Foundation, and NGO, for supplying the Secretatriat with Gas Lamps and chairs for some of the classes and appealed for similar assistance from other NGOs. He said since 1992 when the programme took off in the District, eight thousand 895 people have been made functionally literate.
