Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston says he is driven by the desire to nurture Uganda’s next generation of football stars after being appointed head coach of the country’s U17 and U20 national teams.
Kingston, who was unveiled by the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), will oversee the development of players across the junior national setup as part of a two-year deal.
Speaking after his appointment, the former Black Stars and Hearts of Oak midfielder said he sees the role as an opportunity to make a lasting impact on Ugandan football by creating a clear pathway for young talents to reach the senior national team.
“It’s a huge job,” Kingston said. “If I can produce players to go through the ranks of the youth system to get to the first team, I think that’s a joy. That’s the best, and that’s what I’m looking for.”
The 43-year-old previously worked with Ghana’s U17 side, guiding them during the WAFU B U-17 Championship hosted in Accra last year, where his attacking brand of football drew wide praise.
Kingston’s appointment marks the start of a new chapter for Ugandan football as the East African nation looks to strengthen its grassroots structures and build a sustainable talent pipeline for the future.
His immediate focus will be on preparing the Uganda U17s for upcoming regional competitions, with the long-term goal of producing players ready to compete at senior international level.
